Autumn Rustic Arrow Decor made from Salvage and Repurposed Materials

Hello again my Beauties!
Welcome back.
I have joined up with a bunch of my blogging buddies for the Fall Ideas Tour.
When I joined up I thought, I can do an easy Thrifty Fall craft....;
Easy Peasy....:)
and then the days started slipping away..
kids back to school, lots of work stuff and booth stuff that had to be taken care of;
and I thought..OH NO...what if I can't think of something thrifty to do?
Well, have no fear..in the process of working on other projects my
FALL IDEA struck.
I was cleaning some stuff up in my garage and working on some furniture projects when
I happened upon a pile of my pallet wood.
I also was cleaning up old hardware and other pieces from projects,
and my BRAIN had an FALL IDEA.
Repurposed and Salvage Autumn Rustic Arrows.
I grabbed my Rockwell Bladerunner a straight edge
and a pencil and got to work.
I wanted them to be "RUSTIC" so I didn't want to be perfect about angles
and edges.
I simply drew some straight lines across my boards and then drew a line to angle
them in half as a guide line where to cut.
I used my saw to simply cut the boards into squares and then cut them in half.
Then the fun part.
I grabbed my old hardware parts.
These were the face brackets from some old knobs I had taken off an old dresser. they had 3 holes perfect for attaching the top of the arrow and the bottom of the arrow.
I did this on a few more arrows and gave them a wash of paint with some gray brown paint, and let them dry.
Now here is when I could have grabbed my fancy cutting machine, and made some stencils,
but I wanted this to be "THRIFTY" meaning anyone could make these.
So I decided to just paint them on by hand.
I just used so cream craft paint and
a black sharpie and outlined the letters.
Then to display them I grabbed some pallet wood and made a little stand for them and screwed them into the stand.
The perfect "THRIFTY" Autumn Rustic Arrow Fall decor.
I spent ZERO dollars.
You can't get much THRIFTIER than that! :)
I am not the only one being thrifty either.
Be sure to stop over and see ALL the fabulous bloggers and their Fall Ideas!

Rescued wood turned Michigan "FALL" scrabble tiles.

FEATURED on the HUFFINGTON POST!

While I run around like a chicken with its head off
getting ready for the Randolph Street Market
I thought I would replay a FALL
craft I did last year!
I hope you enjoy!

Good Morning my Beauties!
Well guess what?
It has been feeling like FALL lately here
(which means I have been freezing my tookus off)
That being said....it did motivate me to create some Autumn Decor,
including decorating my mantle.

While we were camping the summer (oh how I already miss summer :))
My Father in Law pulled a box of these wood squares out to burn in the campfire.
Now you all know me by now...
I looked at him and said...
"woa, woa, woa,......whatdayathinkyourdooingtherebuddy?"  :)
To which he replied.".Just getting ready to burn some kindling to start the fire."
I looked at him and said.."hang on"
I went next door to my camper and grabbed a bunch of kindling...and said..
"HERE....I am trading you"!
He knew.....I couldn't let these perfect little square pieces of wood be burned.
He accepted my offer and I brought the wood home....
where it sat........in my garage....
My hubby was thrilled.......NOT!
He said.."what are going to do with those?"
I said..."Make scrabble tiles"
To which his reply came in the form of a NON VERBAL
response that can only be heard by wives...
It was the sound of his eyes ROLLING into the back of his head with
the classic "YEAH RIGHT" look on his face.  :)
Well I took it as a challenge....I didn't know when I was going to make them.
But now I HAD to.
So one night while the hubby was teaching at the college
I stained up some of the squares to look like scrabble tiles.

Then I pulled out my Silhouette cutting machine
and created scrabble letters out of vinyl
and for the "A" I used a state of Michigan graphic that I have
used on other Projects.
You can see those HERE.
Now this is the part where it almost turned into a FAIL...instead of FALL craft.
I laid out my vinyl on my squares...
as usual things were not going smoothly.
I got all the vinyl transferred to my wood blocks but they were
 not sticking for NOTHIN...
I thought...I will use some poly to spray over top of them...
Well, I didn't use the normal poly spray I normally do.
This stuff must have had some other alcohol or acetate chemical in it.
Where I sprayed over the letters it started to basically MELT..
DOH!!!!!
Well, instead of scrapping them right away...I thought
I will wait this out...
I am glad I did.
I let it dry and where I had laid my vinyl there was a perfect impression
of my letters. a nice little raised edge.
So when it was all dry; I pulled off the vinyl and used
a permanent paint pen to color the spots that were not covered in poly.
I actually like how they turned out BETTER.
I don't have to worry about the letters peeling up.
and it fits in perfect with my Fall Mantle.
So like I try to remember...
Be patient...sometimes just like Bob Ross says..
They are happy little accidents.

I hope you enjoyed this little fun Autumn craft.

Until next time.
Go make someones day BEAUTIFUL.

Good Morning my Beauties.
Just a quick post to show you IN FACT that I did do an
Autumn craft this year..:)
I actually did it a couple weeks ago and just now
am getting around to posting it.
Its modeled after the one that Ella Claire did which I just loved.

I have a ton of these old doors in my shed thanks to a friend who remodeled her kitchen.
I save them for when I have just the right sign I want to make.
I just filled the the old hole from the knob and started painting.

I used some custom mixed colors on this to get the reddish orange on the edge.
and painted the middle white.
Wanting the sign to look old its nice because it doesn't have to be perfect.

Using my silhouette I just cut out the words "pumpkins Cider and Hayrides" in'
different fun fonts and then added the arrow.
I used acrylic paint to paint in the stencil.
When it was done I waxed and buffed the whole thing.
and now I can say I did an Autumn craft and get that whole monkey off
my back..LOL!!
I hope you enjoyed!

and now I really want some CIDER..:)
Have a BEAUTIFUL day...
Until next time,
Karin

First lets see our FEATURES!

Twirl and Take a Bow...Hanging on to Summer

I know what you are thinking...it's Fall...let's get on with pumpkins and beautiful colored leaves and mulled cider. But in the Adirondacks it has been 80 degrees and sunny for the last few days, so I am holding tight to summer. We even went swimming in the lake this weekend in between soccer games and emailing Vern Yip. The water was 64 degrees, but it didn't stop the kids...or my husband for that matter. So in the spirit of wanting summer to last just a little bit longer my features all reminded me of my favorite foot loose and fancy free season. Enjoy the inspiration!
