Updating a Farmhouse Style Table and Bench with General Finishes

Welcome back my Beauties.

I am finally back with a makeover.

A while back I picked up this orangey pine table and bench.

You can't see from the pic, but it was pretty scratched and dented on the top, and the legs had some nice chew marks from a dog.

It was in great shape structurally, just needed a little lovin!

I knew I didn't want to go full sand and stripping so I lightly sanded the top and cleaned it and pulled out my 

General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain.

You can see from the photo here, what a difference just one coat of the gel stain did. I did a second coat after it dried just to add more warmth.

Once that was dry I decided to protect the top with

General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Flat

While the top was finishing drying I mixed up a custom color of

General Finishes Milk Paint in Driftwood and Persian Blue 

It was 3 parts Persian Blue and 1 part Driftwood.

I just wanted to gray up the blue a little.

I love how the gray blue worked with the warm walnut color of the top.

I am also happy to say it sold in like 2 days.

INSERT HAPPY DANCE :)

I love how the gel stain, accented the little grooves and markings that had been left on the top.

Hopefully I will get some more furniture makeovers done before the snow flies...

Its coming, I can feel it.

So I better get moving.

ROLLING KITCHEN CART MAKEOVER USING VINTAGE EFFECTS PAINT

Long time no see.

The kids are all back in school and we are finally starting to get back into our normal routine, slowly but surely.

That means also getting back into my makeover routine.

Todays makeover is going to show you how I transformed this outdated 80's pine rolling kitchen cart into a farmhouse style cart using Deco Arts Vintage Effect wash paint and some mineral oil.

First things first. I had to take care of those nasty stains on the top of the cart.

For that I just used my Rockwell random orbital sander and some medium sandpaper.

I knew the stains were topical and weren't going to take much sanding so I didn't want to use low grit sandpaper and rip apart the wood on the top.

Once I had the top all cleaned up I could put the protective and food safe finish on the top.

After hours of research I found out the safest and cheapest way to 

seal a butcher block is with Mineral Oil.

Yup...simple mineral oil that you can get in the drug store for just a few bucks.

Now it was time to finish the base.

For that I used Deco Arts Vintage Effects wash.

This is after the real quick wipe on with the cloth.

I loved how easy it was to use and to transform the piece giving it a vintage feel.

Even better it SOLD the first day at the booth!

What a difference a little mineral oil and some paint made.

Updating the Legs of my DIY Build it Yourself FARMHOUSE Table

I have been meaning to show you this makeover for a while

but you know, LIFE HAPPENS!

I love my Farmhouse Table and you can see how I originally BUILT it HERE 

but I wanted to give it a bit of an update.

I decided to update the table with some Osbourne Wood Products Square Farm Dining Table legs. 

I loved the square details that kept with the feeling of the farmhouse feel with a little more classic style.

First things first. 

I would have to remove the legs.

Since I built the table I knew how to take it apart. 

I flipped the table over and laid it on a cloth to keep from scratching the top.

Next, I took the apron off from the skirt around the the table top.

This is where all the hidden screws were that were holding the old legs on.

I unscrewed the old screws and had to use a little muscle to break off where the wood glue had done a good job assisting the strength of the screws.

I put the new legs in place keeping them square and rescrewed them back into the table top and re attached the skirt. 

Now I waited a few months before I actually got around to painting the legs, because as I said...LIFE HAPPENED!

But when I finally painted them I chose

General Finishes Driftwood Water Based Milk Paint 

This has become one of my favorite neutral grays. 

I love how the slight change in the shape of the leg and the gray color really gave the table some UMPH!!

It flows with all the rest of my decor as well.

Just remember; its just paint!

Don't be afraid to try something fun and different!

Funky Farmhouse Rescued Table and Chairs Painted Makeover!

Welcome back my Beauties! 

Sorry to be away so long but Summer is one of those times we 

suck the life out of. 

We enjoyed our hiking trip to Utah and have taken a few days to 

get back into our regular schedule.

I am still in the process of going through all of my projects from last year when we lost my Mom.

This was one of those big projects that I did and quick photographed and brought to my booth and never had a chance to post. 

You can see from the above picture it was pretty beat up.

I picked this up free on the side of the road.

Structurally it was in great shape but the finish was destroyed.

I decided to give it a face lift with some funky and fun paint colors for a Funky Farmhouse feel.

I knew I wanted to go with a two tone just to play off the chairs from the table base.

For the top I used two different grays and wet blended them.

I believe I used General Finishes Seagull Gray

and Driftwood

Working the two colors together while wet to give a slight layered finish. 

I used General Finishes custom color creator to mix up

Coastal Blue

and 

Persian Blue

I think you will agree it transformed this beat up old roadside rescue high top table and chair set into a funky and fun Farmhouse Style set!

Creating an Eating Nook with IKEA benches

Today I am going to show you how I created my Eating Nook with Ikea benches.

Last week I showed you my Kitchen Makeover that you can see HERE!
Now I will show you how I created that cute little  Eating Nook in that odd corner of my kitchen that has been the bane of my existence for almost 20 years.

While working on my kitchen makeover, I was trying to figure out what I could do with the weird corner in my kitchen.
For almost 20 years I have put corner china cabinets or hutches there trying to just fill the space.
I could never figure out what else to put there.
I wanted to build a corner bench for the kids but knew I didn't want to do a full construction project incase I ever wanted to change up the kitchen again. (I know myself and I know how much I love to change things, so I try to do things that aren't PERMANENT so I don't have to worry about Commitment Issues with major construction issues :)) 
So one day I got on my computer and looked up simple benches. 
I came upon these
 IKEA Molger benches.

I linked to the ones they sell on Amazon if you don't have an IKEA near you. They are much cheaper at IKEA but I know not everyone has that option.

I spent a total of $75 on the two benches straight from Ikea. 

Once I got my benches I started assembling them.  You can see here I have one together and just starting on the second one. 

I got my Bistro table from World Market but only because it was on SUPER SALE and I had an awesome $10 gift card.

If I hadn't scored that I would have bought this one from AMAZON. 

Now you can see from this picture how that little space in the corner would have been left open. I knew if I left it open then stuff would just fall down and the kids would lay and put their feet on the wall. 

So I painted up this little square table that my sister in law had given me and sawed the legs down to just the right size to put in the corner.

Once I had my benches and tables in place I could start decorating.

I wanted a fun eclectic feel so I purchased some 

Embroidered Mandala throw pillows from a local home store.

For the walls I grabbed one of my canvas prints from our trip to IRELAND that you can see HERE.

I also put up this really cute geometric metal and glass wall ledge to put some decor on.

The other wall is where I hung my "Drink More Travel Often"

And that, my Beauties,

was how easy it was to create this simple Eating Nook using Ikea Benches.

It was so fun and I love the FUNCTION that it added to our dining area.

No more wasted space just filling a cabinet to fill that corner.

My daughter sits and draws here, my son loves to eat his breakfast here, and I love to drink my coffee here.

Even though we have lived in our house for almost 20 years, it's so fun to change things up to make it feel different once in awhile.

No need to pack boxes and up our mortgage; just a few hours of work and the place feels NEW!

How I built a Vintage Rustic Farmhouse table for FREE!

I am trying to play catch up with all my posts that I did over the last summer while
I was helping take care of my mom before she passed.
One of those posts is my sons room makeover which I still haven't gotten to.
In that room was his old loft bed.
Knowing me and how I don't like to throw things away I decided to use what ever left over 
wood we could from his bed to make some stuff.

One of the other tables I built this summer was this farmhouse style rustic coffee table.

You can see that build HERE

 But I had some extra old picnic table boards laying on my side yard that kind of matched the Farmhouse table I built for our kitchen.

Only THIS time instead of spending $100, I spent $0.

That is my kind of deal!

First off...just like the other builds, I used all boards from the old bed to make my apron frame and my supports.

(you can even see one of the curved boards from the foot board in there)

I don't like to WASTE anything :)

Just like the other tables I made sure it was square and from underneath I screwed my table top boards to the frame from the supports.

I added my legs in the corner which were left over from another build and got to making her pretty.

Now it was time for my FAVORITE part;

making her PRETTY!

I grabbed my Rockwell sander and started taking down the old worn out picnic table type finish.

I have been dying to try Deco Arts Americana Self Sealing stain and I have to tell you, it's

AWESOME!!!!!

I have used a lot of 2 in one products but none that worked into the finish like this! 

After only one coat it had an almost hand rubbed finish. 

I am thinking of stripping down my own farmhouse table and doing this to it, I loved it so much!

Plus since it was self sealing I didn't have to worry about a protective top coat.

While that was drying I painted the apron skirt and legs in Americana Decor Everlasting

and finish coat in Americana decor ultra matte finish

I just loved how it turned out and was happy that I was able to make another 

farmhouse style table from free lumber.

(I know my husband hates my COLLECTION of wood, but he didn't seem to mind when I brought it to the booth and sold it)

My "collection" paid off!
