Wooo Hoooo!! Finally got this big project done. I finally got to finish the dining room table with 4 chairs.
I am so happy I have my respirator mask...can you imagine this dust in your nose...been there, done that...don't want to do it again..:)
While that was drying I started on painting the chairs. I was so happy to discover 2nd Essence's recipe for homemade chalk paint.
She has been tweaking and tweaking and has come up with a great recipe....1/2 cup plaster of paris...1/2 cup hot water whisk those together and then add 1 1/2 cups of paints.
Make sure you stop over to Valerie's page and let her know how awesome it is that she did all this work.

Oh how pretty. I love the choice of color and pattern for those seats. I admit, I'm a bit of a swirl/damask fiend so I really like the pattern more than anything. I also love the color you chose for the chairs and I'll have to try that chalk paint recipe. I'm glad you were able to convince your hubby to let you bring that table home because the whole set is sure to sell in a heartbeat.

I think you should look for two captains chaais that match and make them over So you can keep it. I would hate to part with that set!

Looks great and how wonderful that you can take an outside picture in January - that sure is unusual for Michigan. But, I think winter is coming soon (darn!).
Your homemade chalk paint worked wonders on the chairs (fabulous price!) and the choice of fabrics is fun. Actually, the fabric color looks like the Color of the Year, Tango Tangerine, by Pantone which I posted about yesterday.
I'm lovin' the orange design! And you have so much patience! I flop out on anything that requires sanding. Funny...our husbands sound the same.

Hey, your link to 2nd essence or whatever the name was is not working. What is the purpose of painting with the chalk type paint--is it mainly to give it an old finish or what--let me know as I have some painting to do!

That is amazing. I tried using chalk and got so many lumps in my paint and when I sanded it looked like I had taken chalk to it. So finding this post today was wonderful news to me. Did you have any lumps in your paint?

I love the stained top with the white distressed legs and chairs! I did have a question. Have you used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint? If so, how do you think this homemade version compares? Your table & chairs are gorgeous!!! I bought some plaster of paris last week to make me some chalk paint & cant wait to get started!! It looks like you distressed the chairs, too - but I didnt see that in the post. (I may have missed it but I read it twice ;-() I just want mine to look as great as yours!!

Suzanne, it was when it was dry...wax and a rag and lots of buffing, gives it that natural distressing..:)
what type of wax do you recommend?
The distressing is perfect!
honestly I just use Johnsons Paste wax. You can get it at home depot or lowes! I love it and it has been used forever on furniture. I know most people who have antiques use only that.

i have a question for you, hope you have a moment to shoot a quick reply [pretty please] wondering if with this chalk paint recipe do you have to sand? I do not want to put out the moolah for AS paints which do not require sanding and I hate sanding... just wondering?
Love the table and chairs! I'm happy to learn new chalk paint recipes. I just refinished a very shiny china cabinet with a different recipe and I also had great results (after I realized you need to mix the grout with water first) LOL... Stop by and see mine when you get a chance. Great job!

Hi there, just stumbled upon your blog today, and found this recipe for Chalk paint, I see you used white, have you tried this recipe with colored paint? if you have has it altered the shade of the paint? I found the plaster of paris mixture to be very white, so white on white wouldn't dull anything, but I'm looking to add this to yellow paint, and I don't want it to become a pastel color...
