Persian Blue Vintage Farm and Floral Dresser Makeover

Welcome back my Beauties! 

I have a super fun makeover for you guys today!

This was an on a WHIM makeover that actually re-ignited my 

love of makeovers.

With everything going on in my life, and after having done this for many many years I was starting to get a bit burned out.

Don't get me wrong, I still love what I do;

but I just hadn't had the UMPH I was usually getting 

when I was making old things pretty again.

In the beginning I used to put original artwork on my furniture.

But most of the people around this area, didn't want to pay the price for ARTWORK and Furniture.

So I went back to just painting the furniture and selling the artwork separately. 

I painted lots of furniture and sold many paintings,

and I was very happy.

But sometimes a girl still needs to be creative.

And this piece and what I used allowed me to still be creative,

while not putting OVERTIME into my pieces.

Let me show you how! 

First things first....PREP..

Wouldn't you know I was cruising along prepping the dresser and I get to the LAST knob and that sucker is LIQUID CEMENTED on.

I had to pull out my HACKSAW and cut that baby off.

Once it was off, I could lightly sand the whole piece.

It had lots of fun stickers all over it, and even though I got all the adhesive off, I wanted to make sure there wasn't any residue anywhere. 

After the light sanding I wiped it down with a damp cloth and pulled out my General Finishes Milk Paint in Persian Blue.

I gave it two coats and let it dry.

Now here is where the inspiration and creativity kicked in.

I have been watching for WEEKS while people were using these fun color transfers. So on a WHIM, I decided to order one from Amazon to see what they were all about.

I ordered the Iron Orchid Designs Farm and Floral transfer.
The BIGGEST one they made.

That was it...I was hooked.

I mean...look how COOL that looks. 

It had those vintage colors that I LOVE and it added so MUCH to this simple little dresser.

Once it was all on I just used my Americana Acrylic sealer in Matte to seal the transfer.

AIN'T she a BEAUT!!!

I fell in love with these transfers and plan on using more in my future. (who am I kidding, I have already done 3 more with about 4 more waiting.)

Best of all, my customers love them too!

This baby sold and and is now enjoying its new life, in its new HOME!

Roadside Rescue Vintage Bicycle Advertisement Dresser

Welcome back my Beauties.

I hope your week has been treating you well so far.

I am working on makeovers and even redoing a dresser for my husband now that the kids are back to their school schedules.

But this dresser I did this summer.

One day my husband was out walking the dog and saw the neighbors had thrown out this dresser. 

I must admit, I have saved many pieces but I was a little nervous about this one.

It was pretty beat up and I almost thought about just not doing it.

But I decided there was no harm in trying to bring this baby back to life.

First things first was I stripped off those nasty stickers stuck to the front of the drawers.

Once I started cleaning off the stickers I realized that with a good scrubbing and sanding the original wood grain was starting to show through. It was almost as if they had used too dark a stain and it just needed a lightening up.

At that point my motivation was in full gear.

I decided to use my General Finishes Driftwood gray for the base of the piece. 

The sides of the dresser were beyond trying to sand down and I figured the paint would help the drawer fronts POP

Plus I had decided to go FULL VINTAGE on this dresser, with my Vintage Columbias Bicycles advertisement Stencil and figured that would pair nicely.

I used my General Finishes Snow White Milk Paint for the stencil.

After it was all dried I gave it even more light distressing and put the old hardware back on. 

I LOVED how it turned out!

I had surprised myself that I was able to save it and that 

I actually thought it looked good. :)

With the old original wood and vintage advertisement I just felt like it was a match made in heaven.

Plus I am happy to say that someone else did too.

It SOLD and I am so happy to have saved a piece from being crushed and dumped in a landfill.

I think I will try to remember that the next time I see a piece sitting on the side of the road and I start to doubt that it can be saved. 

I don't know why I doubt myself?

I mean you can see HERE all the free pieces I have rescued!

You would think I would be used to saving them by now.

I have yet to chuck one in the fire pit, so here's hoping that I can keep up with saving all those stragglers that the husband brings home with the proud little smile on his face. :)

Well, I am off to try to work in the garage if the mosquitoes don't carry me away.

Vintage "COLUMBIAS" Bicycle Dresser Makeover.

I am headed to Chicago this morning for the Blog your Best Conference in Chicago this weekend so 

I am hitting REPLAY on one of my favorite makeovers


Its Makeover Monday My Beauties!
I have been waiting to show you the latest makeover.

It was another one of those,

"WHERE CAN I PUT THIS IN MY HOUSE SO I CAN KEEP IT"

Kinda makeovers!

Sorta like this MCM desk makeover I did last week.

I knew I couldn't keep it, but it didn't stop me from TRYING to 

find a spot for it. :)

Anywhoooo, This is what we started with.

You can kind of see from the picture that the drawer edges had a little bit of damage but not too bad.

The only thing that really was a problem on this was the dang Plastic formica style top.

I had to give it a really good sanding so that the paint would be sure to adhere to it.

 Once I had done that it was time for painting.

I mixed up a custom chocolate black for the top. 

I gave it a couple of coats and let it dry.

 While the top dried I mixed up a custom green for the base.

I painted the drawers and the base with this green.

Now it was time for a decision.

Did I want to leave it as is.....or

add a little UMPH!

I think you know the answer to that.!

 

Remember that vintage advertising window I did a while back.?

Well that was done so I could use my stencil while I waited to find the right dresser to use it on.

THIS was the RIGHT dresser.

After putting on the stencil and letting it dry, 

I waxed and buffed the whole thing.

 I changed out the hardware to fit with the new look of the dresser.

 Now I think you understand why I wanted to keep it so bad.

BUT no room in the house for this piece,

so it is headed to the booth for sale.

Hopefully it will find its way to its forever home SOON!

Play room turned Art is Beauty Art Studio for under $200 REVEAL

Well my Beauties, its finally HERE!

The REVEAL of my finished Art Studio.

I know you have all been patiently waiting to see it

and now the time is finally here.

If you remember, this is the BEFORE.

It was suppose to be a quick project of ripping out carpet, 

painting and moving in and making it my studio,

but then we found water damage......

So you know what that meant....

DECONSTRUCTION...

and then CONSTRUCTION!

You can see from this picture that I had gotten through with the hydraulic cement

and moved on to dry locking. 

That was fun!  NOT!!

Also I had sprayed my trusses.

I wanted to have and industrial feel in the room but still wanted the

white ceiling. This really lightened up the room,

but it was an ALL day process. That old pine soaked up the paint like water in the desert.

You can see on the wall where if my sprayer got clogged I would work spray graffiti on the wall

to make sure it was started back up. 

(hey when you are doing mind numbing work you need some entertainment) :)
Plus all the walls were going to be painted the same white as the ceiling :)

Now it was time for the FUN part.

I had never ever...ever never...never ever...painted  faux brick before.

But I didn't let that stop me.

Did I youtube it.?..NOPE...

Did I look on Pinterest.?...NOPE..

I just grabbed a bunch of paints and started working the wall..

I first put down a almost dark purple color.

I wanted to make sure my brick had depth.

Since real old brick has tons of different colors in it

I knew I had to have LAYERS.

I roller'ed on my purple paint not being too careful.

I wanted to make sure some other colors would show through in the end.

I then went over that with a Dirty gray.

That gave even more depth to the color.

After that I mixed up a custom Brick color that I wanted.

Not to red and not too orange. 

I again used a sponge roller to put that on.

I used the sponge roller after a couple different things because if you didn't fill the roller it left 

little gaps and let the other colors show through, which exactly what I was going for.

After all the paint was dry I used a dark glaze to antique up the brick.

Concentrating on certain areas of the brick to make it look OLD.

At this point I was in LOVE.

But I had a vision from the very beginning.

This was one of those projects that I could see in my head before I even started.

I KNEW what I wanted this room to look like..

I just had no idea HOW I was going to do it.

My inspiration had been old new york apt.  Vintage brick with what are called "ghost signs" on the brick

Vintage advertising.

This was what my head had seen when it envisioned my studio.

thanks to my friend Shelly from Shizzle.

It was finally going to be a reality.

She gave me this overhead projector YEARS ago.

Like....that's how I met her...

I was saying how I NEEDED one..

she lived by me and said...I have one..you can have it.

and we have been friends ever since.

And oh yeah...the projector has sat in my basement since then..

Hubby really LOVED that. 

He wanted to get rid of it and I said..NO...I know I am going to need it..

and I DID....

I used a graphic from "the graphics fairy"

and projected it on my wall.

I grabbed my brushes and paint and started laying it down.

While the paint was drying on the ad.

I started putting down my flooring.

We had gone back and forth on whether or not I was going to paint the floor.

But we had to rip out the tack strips from the cement and it left gouges and holes where

they had been. 

I found these cheap vinyl wood floor strips that are self stick at menards.

So far the only MONEY I had spent on the room was the drylock.

I had everything else on hand. 

I ended up doing the entire floor for $80 

and it was so easy.

We had it done in a day.

So now its time...

Time for the final reveal...

DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!!

TADA!!!!

Here she is..

In all her glory!!!

The paneling was painted...

the trim was up..

and I could move my stuff in.

All my furniture
was from Garage sales and Goodwill.
The Easel and Everything.
The Mid Century Mod Italian Chair. I got for 6 bucks.
I looked it up and they are Rare and sell for over $150
I am so glad I hung onto it until I could use it in my studio.

The kids old playroom shelves now held my art supplies.

I used Gold stencil cream to stencil on one of my fave quotes right on the wall as you walk

in and then just framed it with a gold frame.

I put my antique school desk in and started hanging some of my paintings on my

gallery wall.

and my desk is filled with all things that make me happy.

Even these vintage water color pencils.

My father in law found them for me.

I had them when we were kids.

They were my favorite pencils.

He found them NEW in the box.

Some old art teacher was selling her stuff and

he thought of me.

He is pretty sweet :)

I honestly LOVE my new art studio!

It is my favorite room in my house now.

I find myself just sitting in here even when I am just drinking coffee.

It is truly "where I want to be"

It turned out exactly how I had envisioned it in my head.

I can't believe I finally have my own creative space.

A place to call my own and my refuge when I need some Me time.

I look back at the old pictures and I can't even believe it was the same room.

So from a quick makeover 

to a full on construction that ended up costing me under $200

Dry lock    $35

Vinyl floor $80

Trim           $50

That's a lot of transformation for not so much money!

I couldn't be more thrilled.
